ISO 22301 Update – how will Certified Businesses be Impacted?

11.12.2019

Earlier this year, the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) updated the Standard for business continuity management – ISO 22301.

As with any update to the ISO standards, the focus of ISO 22301 has not changed – it is still intended to provide businesses with a framework for implementing business continuity management processes throughout their organisation. The update was aimed at clarifying the requirements of the standard as no new requirements were needed for this standard.

Other updates include a restructure of clause 8, including moving many discipline-specific requirements to this section. A number of industry and business continuity related terms have also been clarified and in some cases rewritten to reflect current thinking.

What actions should you take?

If you are currently certified to ISO 22301:2012, your long term goal should be to upgrade your Management System to comply with ISO 22301:2019, by 2022. You can also seek certification, demonstrating to customers that you have put best-practice business continuity processes in place.
