The 2018 version of ISO 50001 – Energy Management has been released today (August 21st). This revision sees the Standard updated to include new processes and guidance which will allow businesses to use energy more efficiently and effectively. The framework is especially important for businesses concerned with reducing their environmental impact.
The ISO 50001 Standard gives businesses the tools and techniques needed to effectively manage their energy performance, monitor energy costs and contribute to meeting government-set emissions reduction targets. In turn, businesses will find their energy costs could be lower by reducing wastage and improving energy efficiency.
Perhaps the largest change brought about by the 2018 update is to the high-level structure of the ISO 50001 Standard. ISO 50001 now uses the Annex SL framework used by other ISO Standards such as ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018. The new structure makes it much easier for companies who already follow ISO Standards to follow ISO 50001, and facilitates the use of an integrated Management System (a Management System that covers more than one ISO Standard).
“Because organizations often implement a number of management system standards, the use of a shared structure, as well as many of the same terms and definitions, helps to keep things simple.”
Prof. Deann Desai, Convenor of the working group tasked with revising the standard
