ISO 9001:2015 explained

03.07.2024

ISO 9001 is a Standard that’s globally recognised for Quality Management Systems (QMS). Yes, the core principles remain the same, but occasionally the Standard will undergo revisions based on ever-changing business practices. In this blog, we’ll take a look at ISO 9001:2015, and answer some of the most frequently asked questions, like what is the latest version of ISO 9001, what is ISO 9001:2015, and what is the purpose of ISO 9001:2015.

What is the latest version of ISO 9001?

The latest version is ISO 9001:2015, which follows from ISO 9001:2008. However, as of February 2024, there has been a Climate Action Amendment which integrates climate change considerations into the existing framework. To find out more on this, see our blog ‘What is the ISO 9001 Climate Change Amendment?’.

What is ISO 9001:2015

Published in 2015, ISO 9001:2015 took a shift away from its 2008 version. This most recent update focused on streamlining the structure, a process-oriented approach, and continual improvement. Some of the key changes introduced in the latest version include:

  • High-level structure (HLS): A new standardised structure was developed, making it easier to integrate ISO 9001 with other management system standards, like ISO 14001 for example.
  • Context of the organisation: The Standard now puts emphasis on considering internal and external factors that influence the business and its QMS.
  • Risk-based thinking: A proactive approach to identifying and limiting risks.
  • Knowledge management: Recognising the importance of knowledge and expertise in the business/organisation.
  • Documented information: Documented information replaced document procedures, meaning businesses have more freedom and flexibility in how they document their QMS.

What is the purpose of ISO 9001:2015?

The main purpose of ISO 9001:2015 remains the same as previously, to provide a framework for creating and maintaining a robust QMS. There is just some slight emphasis changes on achieving consistent quality through continual improvement and other process optimisations.
